Wall Street with mixed trend at noon

NEW YORK (AP) – The New York Stock Exchange indices showed mixed trends midday Wednesday: Healthcare and tech companies were up, but banks and other industries were down.

Particularly volatile were a number of specific companies that have been driven by amateur investors on the internet.

The S&P 500 index grew 0.2% while the Dow Jones industrial average added 52 units (0.2%) to 34,665 and the Nasdaq technology increased 0.3%.

The S&P 500 was nearly split in half between rising and falling companies. The Nasdaq benefited from the good performance of the companies that have been driving it for the last 18 months. Microsoft advanced 0.7% and Amazon 0.8%.

The health sector was also prospering: Merck rose 2.2% after announcing an agreement with the United States and Canada on a possible treatment against COVID-19. AbbVie advanced 1.3% after announcing an agreement with Caraway Therapeutics to develop treatments for Parkinson’s disease and other neurological disorders.

The 10-year US Treasury yield fell from 1.52% to 1.49%.

Volatility continued in companies encouraged by investors on the Reddit social network. Clover Health lost 7.1% while AMC Entertainment fell 7.3%.

GameStop, the first of the actions driven by online investors, will issue its financial report after the close.
