WASHINGTON, June 23. / TASS /. Republican Congressmen Mike Rogers (from Alabama) and Michael McCall (from Texas) on Tuesday called on the US administration to immediately send so-called lethal weapons to Ukraine as military aid.
“The US should not wait for the Kremlin to cross even more territorial red lines in Ukraine before sending additional military aid to Kiev. Instead, the administration should channel this aid [в виде так называемых] lethal [вооружений] immediately to contain further aggression [со стороны] Russia, “- say the legislators. They are quoted by the press service of the Republicans of the Committee on the Armed Forces of the House of Representatives of the US Congress.
“As evidenced by the [американской администрацией] decisions to withdraw two US ships from the Black Sea during the build-up of the Russian military presence, abandon critical sanctions against Nord Stream 2 and postpone a meeting with the President of Ukraine [Владимиром] Zelensky before the end of the fruitless summit [президентов США и РФ Джо] Biden and [Владимира] Putin, which took place last week, this administration chooses again and again [путь] appeasement of the Kremlin at the expense of Ukraine. It must end, “the congressmen say.
Military aid to Ukraine
Last week newspaper Politico reported that the White House was going to provide military assistance to Ukraine in the amount of $ 100 million, but changed plans. According to the sources of the publication, the prepared package of assistance measures included, among other things, the supply of destructive weapons to Ukraine. In particular, the possibility of providing the country with short-range air defense systems, firearms and anti-tank weapons was considered. As stated in the Politico material, the National Security Council at the White House suspended the plan after the relaxation of tensions on the border between Russia and Ukraine, as well as on the eve of the Russian-American summit. As one of the interlocutors of the newspaper noted, the possibility of providing assistance to Ukraine is still not completely ruled out.
US Assistant to the President for National Security Jake Sullivan on Sunday Fox News, commenting on the Politico publication, said that the Washington administration in full transferred to Kiev the funds allocated earlier for providing security assistance this year, another $ 100 million were reserved in case of an aggravation of the situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border. “Another $ 100 million was a package [помощи] in case of further Russian incursions into Ukraine. These funds are in addition to $ 275 million (which was allocated by Congress this year – approx. TASS) “, – explained the assistant to the US President. According to his version, this aid package was formed” when tens of thousands of Russian troops were on the Ukrainian border. ” When the troops were withdrawn without entering the Ukraine, we transferred this package to the reserve in case it is needed in the future. These funds are available, the Russians know that they are, and the Ukrainians know that they are, – added Sullivan. “But the claims that we have withheld any security assistance for Ukraine is just nonsense.”
The fact that the American administration has prepared a reserve means of assistance to Kiev in case of an aggravation of the situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border, said on Friday the press secretary of the White House Jen Psaki. She did not elaborate on what volume it was talking about.
Western countries have repeatedly expressed concern about the statements of the Ukrainian military about the build-up of Russian forces along the border with Ukraine. As the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said, the movement of Russian troops through the territory of Russia should not bother other states, since it does not threaten them in any way.
