Saakashvili offered the people love, warmth and … drive

Former President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili Today he was taken to the courtroom for hearings on the case of dispersal of the rally on November 7, 2007, the destruction of Imedi TV by special forces and the appropriation of the property of its owner Badri Patarkatsishvili. To appear before the court and address the people directly – this is what the ex-president has sought since his detention on October 1.

Overthrown, persecuted and unloved presidents in the modern history of Georgia were, but Mikhail Saakashvili – the first one to be in the dock. Today, the Georgian society witnessed his first public appearance, which he made as a defendant nine years after the end of his presidential term.

Today, a trial was held on the case of dispersal of the opposition rally on November 7, 2007, the destruction of Imedi TV by special forces on the same day and the misappropriation of the property of businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili, owner of Imedi TV. The first thing Saakashvili wanted to inform the public about was the following:

“I, Mikhail Saakashvili, and Georgia did not have a criminal president. I want every Georgian to know this. The founder of the Georgian state cannot be guilty, because criminals do not establish, but destroy the state. And now you see a classic example of when Georgia ended up in the hands of bandits ”.

Mikhail Saakashvili looked thinner, pale, but full of energy, which he wished to share with the people:

“I want to tell you, my dear Georgian people, I want to ask you: do you miss the feeling of pride in the country, the pace of development and drive, innovation and restoration, love and warmth, the triumph of victory? Then let’s all put an end to what’s happening now. ”

His first photograph behind glass on the dock was called historical in the Georgian media. The third president himself, who previously liked to compare himself with the Georgian king David the Builder, who ruled in the 10th century, today remembered another king, from the 17th century – Luarsab.

“This is the biggest humiliation. The whole world is amazed that I am addressing you because of the glass fence, instead of moving with you through the country I have built and developing it together. I am the first ruler of Georgia after King Luarsab – and that was 400 years ago – who ended up in prison “– Saakashvili said.

From historical figures from the past, Saakashvili moved on to historical figures from the present. He named Alexander Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin as the root causes of the dispersal of the November 7 rally and the pogrom at Imedi TV, owned by the businessman Patarkatsishvili.

“The guys will drive up and talk to Patarkatsishvili. You don’t have to see him. “ retold in Russian Saakashvili the words that, according to the third president, Lukashenka told him.

There, Saakashvili said that all decisions on November 7 were made by the then Minister of Internal Affairs Vano Merabishvili, that he learned about it from TV. And in other cases, he is not guilty, although he admits that his inexperienced government had a lot of mistakes, and the main one is the judicial system and the prosecutor’s office, which today he is tried and accused, but which he does not admit.

Then Mikheil Saakashvili, as a citizen of Ukraine, decided to appeal not to the Georgian court and society, but to the Ukrainian one – “in his second native, Ukrainian”:

Porsche, I want to congratulate my citizens of Ukraine …

– We do not understand interrupted by the judges. In response, Saakashvili made a comment: according to the law, the court had to provide him with an interpreter, as a citizen of Ukraine. And then the prosecutor Giorgio Cyclauri could not resist:

– How much can you hear about the circumstances associated with other countries, and not a single word about the case under consideration?

– This is a political statement, and do not dare interrupt it, you better sit down, Jarji! – the lawyer shouted back Nika Gvaramia… And other lawyers, albeit in a more polite manner, but insistently asked the judges and prosecutors to let Mikheil Saakashvili finish the conversation. It took over three hours. After that, the former president, referring to the recommendations of doctors, took permission from the judges to leave.

Despite the unrest outside the courthouse, Saakashvili was safely taken to the Gori military hospital.

An hour later, by about five o’clock in the evening, the trial was completed. On the whole, the lawyers were satisfied: the “founding father”, according to lawyer Nika Gvaramia, had a weighty word. But he intends to say even more, as Saakashvili’s lawyers said, at the next trial in a different case: about the embezzlement of state funds in the amount of almost nine million lari, which will take place on December 2. As for today’s cases, the next hearings are scheduled for December 23.

And if Saakashvili’s supporters were satisfied with the speech and message of the third president, in the other part of the opposition and in the ranks of the ruling force they made opposite assessments. Leader of “Girchi” Iago Khvichia, who had no doubts that Saakashvili should stand trial, decided to draw the attention of the ruling Georgian Dream to the following:

“Today Mikheil Saakashvili said that he does not recognize the Georgian justice, the one that he created himself. I think this is a good example for the current government, so that it does not find itself in such a situation in the future, because the Georgian Dream needs to think about a real, thorough judicial reform. ”

Deputies of the “Georgian Dream”, in turn, in the words of Mikhail Saakashvili did not hear the slightest regret about what he had done and compared his speech, as the vice-speaker said. Gia Volsky, with a statement from the emperor after the expired term of office.
