Brian Daboll, the offensive coordinator of the Bufallo Bills, is currently the favorite for the head coach job with the Los Angeles Chargers.
So far, those responsible for the Chargers have interviewed 9 candidates. But for further discussions with Brian Daboll, the divisional playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens tonight should play an important role. Should the bills lose, Daboll can schedule further calls whenever he wants. A signature would also be possible immediately, should the chargers choose him. If the Bills win, the Chargers would have to continue to be patient with any follow-up discussions. Further talks could only take place when the Buffalo Bills have officially ended their postseason.
LA Chargers HC criteria
The current OC of the Bills fulfills many criteria that are considered relevant in the Chargers head coach search. He is an offensive minded coach who has coached under a number of the best coaches. Including Bill Belichick (New England Patriots) and Nick Saban (Alabama). Daboll has been the offensive coordinator at the Buffalo Bills since 2018. He played a major role in the development of the offensive play and was able to take it to a new level in Buffalo. Brian Daboll is also committed to advancing the productivity of the young quarterback franchise Josh allen. In Los Angeles, the expectations would not be lower. The Chargers expect their new head coach to mentor rookie quarterback Justin Herbert. Herbert is to develop from a beacon of hope into an undisputed franchise leader in the next few years.
In addition to the criteria that Daboll seems to meet, the shared past of Brian Daboll and Chargers General Manager Tom Telesco is also a possible indication of the decision in favor of Daboll. Both know each other from their time together at St. Francis High School in Buffalo. In high school they both played on the football team, while Tom Telesco was two grades above Brian Daboll. Back then, Daboll was considered tough safety and Telesco was at home as a receiver and cornerback.
After high school, they parted ways. Daboll learned his trade in New England (Patriots | Bill Belichick) and Alabama (Alabama Crimson Tide | Nick Saban). Tom Telesco drove to Indianapolis, where he began his career as a Pro Scout in 2001. In 11 years Telesco worked its way up steadily under General Manager and Team President Bill Polian (Colts | 1998-2011). The Pro Scout became Director of Pro Scouting in 2004, Director of Player Personnel in 2006 and finally Vice President of Football Operations in 2012.
At the Los Angeles Chargers, the paths of the two St. Francis High School graduates could now cross again.
