It was at the suggestion of the one who was to become her first trainer, Serge Chrétien, that Maude Charron tried weightlifting.

“In 2016, four years from Tokyo, the timing was perfect to change and it was a good decision to go for weightlifting, but I didn’t really believe in the Olympics at the start. Serge sold me international competitions and sales destinations. The transition was not difficult, ”says the athlete.

Charron quickly discovered that she possessed great strength.

“In CrossFit, I mixed a lot of things, but I had never tried lifting super heavy weights and found that I had super good muscle strength when cardio was not my strength. I was predestined to do weightlifting. “

Pan American Records

After breaking three Pan-American records in Santo Domingo last April, does Charron think she can improve her charges in Tokyo?

“Two years ago, I wasn’t lifting such heavy loads and I was only fighting for my place at the Games. I keep the same mentality. I don’t have big goals and I want to take advantage of them. I want to improve my loads, but the classification is so unpredictable ”, underlines the one who occupies the 4th place in the world in the 64 kg.

In the Dominican Republic, Charron lifted 107 kilos in the snatch and 133 kilos in the clean and jerk for a total of 240 kilos, eclipsing the marks of Christine Girard in the process.

Her first trainer is convinced that she can stand on the podium.

“She has every chance of a successful podium”, believes her first trainer, Serge Chrétien.

“I don’t want to talk about numbers because I don’t want to put pressure on her, but I think she will improve her personal brands in Tokyo. The postponement of the Games was an advantage for Maude and not a disadvantage, ”he maintains.

Future plans

The Rimouski weightlifter could continue his career until 2024 for the Paris Games.

“I do not see myself stopping overnight,” said the future police officer. Paris is coming fast and the Tokyo Games will serve as a qualifier for the Commonwealth Games which will take place in the summer of 2022 in Birmingham, England. I did the 2018 ones in Australia and want to do them again. Commonwealth countries have the same values as Canada. I also thought to do Nicolet [École nationale de police du Québec] this autumn. “

Charron and Tali Darsigny (59 kg) will be in action on Tuesday.
